Between the Stops is a sort of a memoir, my sort. It's about a bus trip really, because it's my view from the Number 12 bus.
From a brief history of lady gangsters at Elephant and Castle to anecdotes about boarding school, this is the long-awaited memoir from one of Britain's best-loved characters. Presenter of QI, former host of The Great British Bake Off, writer, broadcaster, activist and comic on stage, screen and radio for nearly forty years: this is an autobiography with a difference - as only Sandi Toksvig can tell it.
A funny and moving trip through memories, musings and the many delights on the number 12 route, Between the Stops is also an inspiration to us all to get off our phones, look up and talk to each other because as Sandi says: 'some of the greatest trips lie on our own doorstep'.
Customer Reviews
laughing out loud, tearing up, and deeply inspired
What a wonderful journey! As a fan of Sandi from QI I dove into this book upon my mother’s recommendation. It wasn’t the ‘memoirs’ or ‘auto-biography’ I expected but it was so much more! As we journey together along the Number 12 nuns route in London, Sandi gives little insights into the history of some cool people and significant places, inter-mingled with stories and anecdotes from her own life. I was laughing out loud, tearing up, and deeply inspired and moved by her own stories and loved how she curiously observed the day-to-day going’s on on around her on the Number 12 bus. I can’t wait to dive into some of her novels now, but I finish this book feeling as though I’ve made a new friend, which sounds weird, but I feel like she writes with such authenticity and that the tone really captures her personality so well, that I’ve gotten to know the BTS Sandi. “I read somewhere that there are no accidents, just ideas trying to find us.” Is possibly my favourite quote from the book and I’ve also got a list of references to follow up on. Thank you Sandi.
Didn’t want the book to end
Sandi is a brilliant writer, making you laugh and cry at the same time. A little snapshot into life and the knowledge she carries with her every day.
A Series of Reminiscences
Sandi Toksvig is a skilful raconteur. Her witty reminiscences meander gently along like the No. 12 bus in London traffic. I could practically hear her voice musing about this and that. With a ton of historical tidbits about the Dulwich area, this is a gentle and comfortable book to curl up on the sofa with a hot chocolate, or glass of wine on a lazy Sunday afternoon. There were so many anecdotes I loved that it is difficult to pick any favourites but I really loved the story of the audition with Noel Fielding for GBBO. Give this book a try, you won’t be disappointed.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
