Lindsey Kelk is one of the queens of modern romantic comedy, and this Christmas-set novel sparkles like newly fallen snow. At its core, Christmas Fling is a fake-dating set-up. Laura is expecting to spend the festive season solo, enjoying some time out as a flat sitter. But when she’s mistaken for the girlfriend of Callum, who owns the flat, she’s whisked up to the Scottish Highlands to spend time with his family. This could be the stuff of pleasant-enough cliché, but Kelk makes the plot leaps seem plausible and her witty style makes everything great fun. It’s also a welcome twist to find that Laura is a celebrated neurosurgeon, while Callum is a pastry chef. These days, that shouldn’t feel radical, but it’s a pleasing change to read about a couple where the woman is the more financially stable of the two. Kelk always chooses a good location, having previously taken us everywhere from New York to Paris, and her descriptions of the wintery Highlands will make you yearn for the moors and the glens. Save for December or get into the Christmas spirit right now: This one is a real gift.
