Publisher Description

A tornado watch covers thirty Oklahoma counties. At 2:40 p.m. on May 20, 2013, the National Weather Service issues a severe thunderstorm warning for a storm near Newcastle and warns of possible tornado development. The storm is moving east. The view beneath it is already disappearing in rain.
At KQOC, meteorologists Dana Vale and Nolan Price work to explain each new update without claiming more than the data can show. On the roads, storm chasers Cal Rusk, Marnie Bell, and Owen Slate fight to keep the supercell in sight as hail and rain close around them. At South Creek School, coach Lila Chen and the staff keep children together as the warning tightens. One player has brought her Chihuahua, Boo Boo. When the team moves to shelter, the children take on a small, urgent mission: keep Boo Boo safe.
The tornado will cross Newcastle, south Oklahoma City, and Moore. Reporters, families, school staff, and first responders must act on fragments of information, then face the long work that follows.
EF-5 is a disaster thriller grounded in the documented chronology and impacts of the May 20, 2013, tornado. Its station, chasers, school, characters, and personal scenes are fictional or dramatized. A source-based epilogue looks at tornado counts, later storms and their reach, and what current research can and cannot tell us about future risk.
