Just brilliant
This is a fantastic book. I was wary at first, given that I knew the book was written as a sort of fictional history. I worried that it would read like a simple chronicle of events, but it doesn’t. It’s full of life, and character and plot. Surely, it reads differently than a ‘normal’ novel, and you don’t get the internal monologue of the ASOIaF series, but it doesn’t matter. This style works. It reminds me a bit of the Chinese classics, particularly Romance of the Three Kingdoms. I’m sure there are probably western works more closely comparable, but for me, like Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the large cast of characters and intricate history and detail kept me absolutely hooked. Strongly recommend.
Stunning work of Fictional History
George is honestly my hero and who I look up to with fantasy work and this book only emphasises how he makes fiction easy to read while presenting the book from “someone else’s” quill - honestly cannot wait for the second part of this and I’m counting down the days til winds also ! Definitely read!
History book
If you want to feel like Tyrion Lannister reading some boring leather-bound book in the Red Keep, then this is for you. This book is absolutely not like a song of ice and fire, it’s more of a textbook, no storyline and helplessly dry.
