Sarah Brown has tucked an enormous amount of personality into this economical story, which starts as one thing and then morphs wildly and unpredictably. Agnes is a jaded, overworked nurse at Montreal’s oldest hospital; she’s funny and her descriptions are on-the-nose, making even the most banal details interesting. From bedpans to porn theatres, there’s no shortage of ick in Brown’s creation, yet we couldn't get enough of it.
