Following the execution of Louis XVI, a Royalist revolt roke out in La Vendée under the leadership of Charles de Lescure and Henri Larochejaquelin, both wealthy landowners in that region. After an initial success in capturing Saumur, the Republican armies invaded the province, sacked and burned the towns and villages and with savage violence destroyed the chateaux of the Royalists. The romance centers on the love of Henri Larochejaquelin and Marie de Lescure, and on the renegade Denot's love for Agatha Larochejaquelin.

Decent read
I quite enjoyed this. It's based on historical events around the time of the French revolution of 1792/3. An area on the West coast of France resisted the republicans and fought with some success against the armies sent to suppress them. The Royalists are portayed as honourable, god-fearing people whereas the republicans murder men, women and children indiscriminately. There are a couple of strange chapters in the middle where we visit Mr and Mrs Robespierre to find out that he is a driven, principled man and she has a heart. There is romance amongst the royalists and some heroics, cowardice and madness. The book is readable but the tone is not quite powerful enough to be a great book.
