Great change of pace
Reading the Heresy series in order this was a great change of pace - everyone loves the Astartes but another novel full of Primarchs and honour would be getting dull. Here you have Assassins, political intrigue, a bit of a cop drama serial killer chase and some more ordinary citizens. Admittedly there are some big flaws in this novel - some odd tone shifts (the beginning and ending have the gothic fantasy trappings of the series - the majority of the book is more like an extended episode of 24 though) and the Assassin team up is a bit too 'team America' to take seriously but ignore those and its an interesting look at both sides resorting to underhand tactics and a lot of fun to be away from the usual angry-shouty-chainsaw Primarch toddler rampages.
