SUNDAY TIMES

One of the most acclaimed novels of the 21st Century, from the Nobel Prize-winning author

Kazuo Ishiguro imagines the lives of a group of students growing up in a darkly skewed version of contemporary England. Narrated by Kathy, now thirty-one, Never Let Me Go dramatises her attempts to come to terms with her childhood at the seemingly idyllic Hailsham School and with the fate that has always awaited her and her closest friends in the wider world. A story of love, friendship and memory, Never Let Me Go is charged throughout with a sense of the fragility of life.

'Exquisite.'
GUARDIAN

'A feat of imaginative sympathy.'

A Human Predicament

The basis of the story is a particular human need and who is going to provide for it. Once it dawned on me how this need was being catered for, I felt repulsion for the very idea but had to read to the end, to find out how it affected the main characters, even though the ending was inevitable.

Loved it

I read this book really easily with nothing much seeming to happen (but still a page turner if that's possible). Then I finished it and burst into tears. Now I keep thinking about it. Really disturbing but so good.

A masterclass in show don’t tell writing

As with Remains of the Day, the genius of this novel is the notes he doesn’t play but allows the reader to hear in their heads. One of the most terrifying ’what if’ dystopian posits since The Handmaid’s Tale, told in a thoroughly British way.
