'One of the greatest storytellers of our time' - Delia Owens, bestselling author of Where the Crawdads Sing
From the number one bestselling author of The Women, in Kristin Hannah’s Night Road, the consequence of one terrible night changes a group of young people’s lives forever.
'There was a beauty in chaos, a wildness that hinted at things gone wrong and mistakes overcome'
Lexi and Mia are inseparable from the moment they start high school. Though different in so many ways – Lexi is an orphan and lives with her aunt on a trailer park, while Mia is a golden girl blessed with a loving family and a beautiful home – they nonetheless recognize something in each other, and Mia comes to rely heavily on Lexi’s steadfast friendship.
The summer they graduate is a time they’ll never forget; a summer of love, best friends and shared confidences. But then one night changes them forever. As hearts are broken, loyalties challenged and hopes dashed, the time has come to leave childhood behind and learn to face a new future . . .

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Hannah follows up Winter Garden with a strained story of friendship, social pressures, love, and forgiveness. After a string of foster homes and the death of her heroin-addict mother, Lexi Baill is taken in by a newly discovered great-aunt who lives a spartan life near Seattle. Despite financial problems, the two are glad to have found each other, and though Lexi resolves to stay safely on the periphery at her new high school, she soon meets Mia, unhappy and awkward despite a solid family life, a loving twin brother, Zach, and a closetful of clothes. The friendship flourishes, and Mia's mother, Jude, relieved and pleased for her daughter, draws Lexi into the family circle. But trouble begins in senior year with a slowly growing attraction between Zach and Lexi, who take great pains to make Mia comfortable with the change in the dynamics. This familiar story takes an unfortunate turn deep into after-school-special territory when Lexi, Mia, and Zach collectively make a bad decision that results in a tragedy with extreme repercussions. Even readers who like their melodrama thick will have problems as Hannah pushes credibility to the breaking point, and more than once.
Customer Reviews
Good read!
I read this book in a week which is good going for me. It's very different to what I am used to, but I really enjoyed it.
Captivating!
This is genuinely one of the best books I’ve EVER read!! The author has this really clever way of making you smile one minute and suddenly crying the next. An incredibly emotional and complex story that was still completely believable. Absolutely fantastic!! If I could have rated this book a 10 I certainly would have done!
Night story.
A page turner. Keeps you in the moment of sadness and joy from beginning to end.
