Eve Chase does an excellent trade in tightly-plotted mysteries anchored by siblings entangled in shadowy, multigenerational secrets and The Midnight Hour is her latest novel in that riveting vein. Alternating between two Notting Hill-based timelines, Chase deftly unpicks the knot of vague memories and half-truths that has shrouded the relationship between historical romance writer Maggie and her adopted younger brother Kit for 21 years, following the disappearance of their mother, a former model turned glamorous TV personality. Now living in Paris to avoid her past, an unexpected phone call summons a fearful Maggie back to London, where excavation work for a basement extension on the home her family once lived in threatens to unearth something she has long hoped would stay hidden. The twists come thick and heavy as present-day events and the flashbacks to that fateful May in 1998 unfold to meet in the middle, helping Maggie and Kit to make sense of their complicated childhoods. Just when you think you’ve got all the pieces of the puzzle in place, Chase pulls out to reveal a different picture entirely, leaving you racing through the final pages to find out how it all fits together in the end.
