This is the first of Karen Aldous’ books I have read and what a lovely read it was.
Essentially we have two story-lines in this book which converge on each other towards the end. Evie Grant is a young woman living in a small village in the South of France with her daughter. She has a near miss on her bicycle on a bridge which has become a movie set and a mysterious new man who appears to be in charge awakens an interest in the villages history in her, and an interest in him.
Meanwhile, her partner, and daughter’s Father, has been long absent. It becomes clear within a couple of chapter’s there is a psychological abuse here but Evie is oblivious to it, albeit frustrated with her situation.
The tension throughout this novel is gently paced and seductively built so that you don’t know where the story is going to go or what is going to happen. Evie’s growing awareness that her situation isn’t normal and that her partner has been treating her badly is very realistic and moving.
There is some great history in this novel, I’m not sure if any of it is based on reality (I’m not up on my French history) but it’s well written, interesting and sewn into the story in a wonderful way that makes the romance element of this story really intriguing.
There were a few moments where scene changes within the novel seemed a little disjointed without completely smooth transitions, like maybe a new chapter should have started. This only happened a couple of times but was a little awkward when it did.
Overall, One Moment at Sunrise, was a pleasant read and will make a great summer read. The beautiful French Riviera setting is warming and inspiring. The characters, even the not so nice ones, are well formed and interesting to read.
