‘I absolutely devoured every single word.’ NetGalley reviewer, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

One broken marriage. One broken heart. One chance to meet someone new.

Hannah leaves her unhappy marriage with her daughter Ava and moves to the village of Leadsham to start afresh. She plans to keep a low profile, focusing on Ava and making a new life for them, far away from her violent ex-husband.

What she hadn’t counted on was Andrew Brody. A police officer with a strict moral code, he knows something’s wrong as soon as he meets Hannah, and he wants to help. But Hannah has been let down by the police – and men – before, and pushes him away.

But the more Hannah tries to ignore Brody, the more she’s drawn to him. Caring, kind and patient, he’s nothing like the man she’s running from. Can Hannah finally put her past behind her, and open her heart to someone new?

Good

I was drawn to this book because I liked how it placed domestic violence as a main theme - rather than hinting at it in the protagonist’s past. I really enjoyed the first few chapters, where the author focused in on Hannah adapting to life away from her abusive partner, supporting her young daughter, regaining her independence etc. I did feel that once the love interest was introduced, the plot fell away. It wished the romance was so rushed and that it didn’t become the central focus of who Hannah is as a character. It shrank the story by sidelining the original draws of the book in favour of the mini dramas of a not quite relationship between two people who keep admitting they’re attracted to one another. And things between Hannah and Andrew became quite repetitive and stilted after a while. Overall, I liked the book and it’s premise and the core messages within the story - I just feel that the romance storyline could have run alongside other themes, as opposed to taking over the book entirely.
