The Sayles might not have been the only Jewish atheist communist family in Liverpool, but Alexei knew from an early age that they were one of the more eccentric.
Born on the day egg rationing came to an end, Alexei was the only child of Joe, an affable trade unionist who led the family on railway expeditions across eastern Europe, and Molly, a hot-tempered red-head who terrified teachers and insisted Alexei see the Red Army Choir instead of the Beatles.
Perceptive and hilarious, this is a portrait of a family, a city, a country and a continent going through enormous changes.
'Sayle's book has charm and substance, both as memoir and history'

Great book.... but what's with the price???
Always been a fan of Alexei Sayle and this book is not a disappointment , apart from the price!!! 15.99 from the iBook store, but only 12 quid in physical form delivered from a well known online store named after a south American river.
Why is it abridged?
I don't want to read an abridged version, so can someone explain why this has been done?
Where is the Dog?
This is a wonderful autobiography, full of insightful description and veering between at times between the maniacally insane and at other times pithy, erudite and hilarious. As a low paid worker with a socialist "boss" I can at times identify with this poor lost embryonic communist that is the boy Alexi. Only joking. But where is the dog? I was sure there would be mention of a dog named Stahlin who actually ate Alexi's homework?! This was the only let-down in an otherwise unfathomably derogated story. And I want to have a go at performance poetry.
