Opulence. Invasion. Terror. And forbidden passion in 1930s Singapore.
'They were the golden days, when Singapore was as rich as its climate was steamy, its future as assured as it was busy. And those days were made even better when, as was inevitable, I fell in love with the Chinese beauty of Julie Soong and, against all unwritten canons of Singapore life, we became lovers.'

Best period novel about Singapore
This book is absolutely amazing and highly underrated, it is worth the read and long enough to really get involved in the story. Noel Barber’s personal story adds a fascinating background to the writing of this book and it captures the feel of Singapore so well!
The best period book ever written about Singapore. A must read epic. Watch the mini series AFTER u read this book. I first read it when I was 16, I've read it so many times since and I'm 46 now. My father lived in Singapore in the '60's and wrote to Noel Barber after he read this book saying how he really captured the real essence of Singapore. Noel Barber wrote back to him and I still have that letter. A wonderful read, similar to Tia Pan, James Clavell.
