The final book of Charles Oman's masterpiece "The Dark Ages". Book III illustrates the rise of Charlemagne and the ultimate decline of Europe. The Empire that Charles the Great struggled to create out of the ashes of the Roman Empire fragments under the civil wars of his sons and grandsons. And during the internal strife of the Carolingians, the Saracens and Vikings begin to ravage Europe, followed by an even more fearsome menace: the Magyars. 

We also bear witness to the further decline of the Eastern Roman Empire and the schism between Orthodox and Catholic churches.
