EUROPE STARES INTO THE ABYSS
Plague and famine stalk the land, greedy princes care for nothing but their own ambitions, and an ancient evil lurks beyond the edges of the map..
When only dark paths lead towards the light - paths the righteous dare not tread - the Chapel of the Holy Expediency steps forward. Its congregation of cursed monsters and convicted heretics will cross every line, commit every sin, and turn every mission into a disastrous bloodbath in the service of the greater good.
Now the hapless Brother Diaz must somehow bind the worst of the worst to a higher cause: to put a thief on the throne of Troy, and unite the sundered church against the coming apocalypse.
WHEN YOU'RE HEADED THROUGH HELL, YOU NEED THE DEVILS ON YOUR SIDE.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Bestseller Abercrombie (The Wisdom of Crowds) mixes a large helping of humor into his typical grimdark fare in this screwball epic set in a medieval-esque world where elves occupy the Holy Land and the female pope in Rome looks to settle a schism with her eastern counterpart, the patriarch of Troy. Her chosen tool is a street thief, Alex, who might just be the long-lost heir to the Serpent Throne of Troy. She sends Alex to claim this imperial crown with the help of her "devils," warriors of the secret 13th Chapel of the Holy Expediency. The road to Troy is perilous, and Alex's long-lost cousins, each eager to take the throne themselves, repeatedly attempt to halt her progress. Meanwhile, the devils—an immortal knight, a shy elf, a Viking werewolf, a polished vampire, and a disgruntled necromancer—are not terribly fond of either Alex or each other. Abercrombie leavens the violence with light banter ("Whoever would've thought, a few months ago, when he was diligently reviewing the monastery's accounts, that slathered with gore would be a phrase he routinely employed?") and touches of sweet sapphic romance. Fans will come for the wicked swordplay and stay for the growing bonds between the eclectic cast.
Customer Reviews
Very good read
Well written and smart, characters to root for and wryly funny even through the gore spattered pages. Loved this book
What a talent
Yet again Joe has delivered. We are in a new universe and it it so eloquently delivered. I love the books and as a person who works alone and out of doors for a lot of the time I strongly recommend the audio book, read by the peerless Steven Pacey. Once heard, his voice will be in your head as you read the regular book. Heartfelt thanks to you both for the pleasure you have delivered to an old git! Cheers - Richard BW
Love Joe’s writing
Slow burner. Gets better and better.
More humorous and less dark than previous books. Worth every penny, though.
