The Gentleman's Work Code

Most adult men, asked honestly on a Sunday evening whether they are looking forward to Monday morning, give an answer they would rather not give. Some are bored. Some are quietly exhausted. Some have arrived, by long accumulation, in roles no honest version of themselves would have chosen. This book is for the man willing to look at the answer.

The Gentleman's Work Code is a practical manual for the disciplines of a working life. Not productivity advice. Not career strategy. Not the modern script of passion and calling. The slower, structural work of building a working life worth having across thirty or forty years.

Across fourteen chapters, six illustrative case studies and a twenty-eight-day programme, it sets out the disciplines: the Sunday evening test that reveals the actual state of the working life; the difference between the job, the work and the vocation; what good work actually feels like; the architecture of sustained attention against the shallow demands; the craft of the plateau, where most real expertise is built; the relationship to feedback; the difficult passages (joining, leaving, the difficult boss, mid-career restlessness); and the long arc across the decades.

This is not a book about hating your job. It is a book for the man who has noticed that his working life is not adding up to what it could, and would like to do something practical about it.
