About the author
Val McDermid grew up in a Scottish mining community then read English at Oxford. She was a journalist for sixteen years, spending the last three years as Northern Bureau Chief of a national Sunday tabloid. Now a full-time writer, she divides her time between Cheshire and Northumberland. Her novels have won international acclaim and a number of prestigious awards, including the Gold Dagger for best crime novel of the year, the Anthony Award for best novel, and the Los Angeles Times Book of the Year Award. Great read
I have only started reading Val Mcdermids books in the last year.
In relation to The singing Mermaids, I found the book easy to read as I am very much into crime & thrillers and books that make you think of the plot as you are reading. McDermid is able to write in a manner that allows you to paint a picture in your mind of the scene the characters are at and what they are seeing.

I stopped reading this book. It was cliche but also deeply unpleasant. I read for pleasure and gleeful description of animal cruelty is ....words fail me. Horrible truly.
