Sophie Breeze is a brilliant bridesmaid. So brilliant, in fact, that she's made it her full-time job.
As a professional bridesmaid, Sophie is secretly hired by brides to be their right-hand woman, ensuring their big day goes off without a hitch. From wrangling rowdy hen dos to navigating last minute portaloo cancellations, there's no problem she can't solve.
So when she's employed by an actual Marchioness to help plan the society wedding of the year, it should be a chance for Sophie to prove just how talented she is.
Of course, it's not ideal that the bride, Cordelia, is rude, difficult and determined to make Sophie's life a nightmare. It's also a bit inconvenient when Sophie finds herself drawn to Cordelia's posh older brother, who is absolutely off limits. And when a rival society wedding is announced, things get even more complicated . . .
Can Sophie pull off the biggest challenge of her career, follow her heart and maintain her reputation - all while keeping her true identity hidden?

YA author Birchall (the Morgan Charmley series) makes her adult debut with a unique, hilarious spin on wedding mayhem. As a professional bridesmaid, Sophie Breeze is part wedding planner, part emotional support expert, and she's dealt with everything from posh port-a-potty crises to having to dress up as Chewbacca in a Star Wars–themed wedding. When she's hired by the Marchioness of Meade to pretend to be a friend and bridesmaid to her socialite daughter, Lady Cordelia Swann, Sophie jumps at the chance, knowing that the aristocratic wedding will put her business on the map. But Lady Cordelia doesn't want Sophie's help and goes to great lengths to get Sophie to quit. Their contentious relationship takes a turn when Cordelia's former best friend chooses to have her society wedding on the same date as Cordelia's. Now it's a competition, and Cordelia's all in. Suddenly, Sophie must scramble to create the perfect wedding—which includes committing designer espionage—all while fighting her growing attraction to Cordelia's brother, Tom, who doesn't know that she's not really a friend of his sister's but hired help. Birchall pays just as much attention to the complex nuances of female friendship as to the healing power of love, resulting in an entertaining romp. This is sure to please.

A fun comfort read
When I realised that Katy Birchall had previous written for young adults I was a worried that The Secret Bridesmaid would be aimed at this age group. After just reading the first page it was obvious that this was an adult contemporary romance that became extremely funny and entertaining.
Sophie is a professional bridesmaid, just like a wedding planner but secretly employed by the bride as her best friend and bridesmaid.
Sophie is the zen to her bride's hysteria, calming them down, while offering an alternative to their ludicrous requests.
Lady Victoria, the Marchioness of Meade, engages Sophie's services for her daughter Cordelia's high society wedding. Except Cordelia is adamant that she doesn't want help, continually acting a prima donna by making the most outrageous demands in an attempt to force Sophie to quit. If Sophie succeeds to create the society wedding of the year it will make her career, but can she work with Cordelia's insulting behaviour and requests that become more and more outlandish.
An amusing and easy to read book, recommended whether or not you're a fan of fancy weddings!
Lighthearted Chick Lit
I enjoyed this story about a professional bridesmaid helping brides dreams come true and being a great friend to them all. Until she meets the bridezilla of them all, rude and with impossible demands. There are funny moments galore but I was disappointed with this book, which was billed as a rom-com, when there was only a hint of a romance; it therefore lost a star for me. Genre seemed more chick-lit/women’s fiction to me.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
