Iris Costello is the pen name of British novelist Nuala Ellwood, a psychological thriller writer here making her first foray into historical fiction. Her previous genre comes into play in this dual-timeline novel, which has a mystery at its heart and a twist or two lurking within its pages. In the mid-1930s, young Basque girl Teresa escapes the Spanish Civil War and arrives in south London, only to get caught up in the Blitz as WWII begins. The action darts assuredly between wartime and modern day, where 999 call-handler and fellow south Londoner Corrine plays detective, piecing together the story of Teresa and her adopted family. It’s deftly researched and refreshingly modern in its themes, touching on LGBTQ+ relationships, bigotry and immigration. It’s also a love letter to London’s neighbourhoods through the ages, with their hotchpotch of characters and cultures, all (largely) muddling along together.
