Publisher Description

The popular paperback edition with a cover design by Tolkien himself, to complement the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings paperbacks. Includes a special preface by J.R.R. Tolkien.

The Silmarillion is an account of the Elder Days, of the First Age of Tolkien’s world. It is the ancient drama to which the characters in The Lord of the Rings look back, and in whose events some of them such as Elrond and Galadriel took part. The tales of The Silmarillion are set in an age when Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, dwelt in Middle-Earth, and the High Elves made war upon him for the recovery of the Silmarils, the jewels containing the pure light of Valinor.

Included in the book are several shorter works. The Ainulindale is a myth of the Creation and in the Valaquenta the nature and powers of each of the gods is described. The Akallabeth recounts the downfall of the great island kingdom of Númenor at the end of the Second Age and Of the Rings of Power tells of the great events at the end of the Third Age, as narrated in The Lord of the Rings.

‘How, given little over half a century of work, did one man become the creative equivalent of a people?’ The Guardian

‘Demanding to be compared with English mythologies… at times rises to the greatness of true myth.’ Financial Times

‘A creation of singular beauty… magnificent.’ Washington Post

‘A grim, tragic, brooding and beautiful book, shot through with heroism and hope… its power is almost that of mysticism.’ Toronto Globe & Mail

Must Read

For those who want to delve further into the history of Tolkien's Middle-Earth, this is a must read, be prepared for complexity and many different names for places than we are used to from the films. The Silmarillion tells the story of how Middle-Earth began, the appearance of the 4 Races and the battles fought, while following the events leading up to the Rings of Power being created and the events around that era. Also, we understand more about the main characters such as; Galadriel, Elrond, Saruman and Gandalf and who could forget - Sauron. Delve into the history of these characters and their family trees/histories and learn a whole new perspective of Middle-Earth that the films did not put across.

Brilliant read.

A very good and enjoyable experience if what you look for in The Silmarillion is a well organised plot of information regarding the ancient ages of Middle-Earth. The book is written in an old style of English which can be hard to comprehend if one is not used to it, however, it is generally easily picked up on. If one is in search of an epic masterpiece which is written in a similar way to JRR Tolkien's LOTR trilogy, then they would not find it here. Books such as The Hobbit and The Children of Hurin are recommended. If one is interested in Unfinished Tales or enjoyed it, it is a similar experience to that of The Silmarillion.
