Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes is a Robert Louis Stevenson novel that introduced the lone traveler and his comical and maddening animal companion genre. This book has inspired other works such as Steinbeck’s Travels with Charley.
As a young man, Robert Louis Stevenson went on a 12 day hiking trip in the Cevennes Mountains in the south of France. The adventure became one of the first novels he ever penned. A young Stevenson recounts his time with a less than cooperative donkey named Modestine and the problems that followed. The 120 mile solo hike has become the model for other travel journals and has been thought to be a classic example of “outdoor literature.” Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes takes the reader on the comical and poignant journey that introduced Robert Louis Stevenson to the world.
Root for the young Stevenson as he overcomes a sickly childhood, a lonely heart, and the countless challenges all men face when out on their own for the first time. Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes is a must have for any Robert Louis Stevenson fan.

Travels with My Donkey
An excellent enchanting short read by the most poetic of authors. Such an agreeable relaxing holiday read, his humanity shines through. As I also share his view on religion I must try and express it as even handidly as he does.
