Publisher Description

This is a novel about two very different girls, and how sometimes, the sum can be more terrifying than each of its parts.

'You may think you know what they do in the dark . . . But who are "they"? . . . Set in the mid-1970s, What They Do in the Dark combines cosy nostalgia (jumbo lollies, gas fires) with rumbles of apprehension. Something awful's going to happen, but it's not clear what . . . A terrific debut, full of energy and colour; as propulsive as a thriller' Carrie O'Grady, Guardian

Trivialities ,

The awfulness of childhood

Captures the unfathomable horrors of childhood and its skewed angles taughtly and believably. One can see oneself in all the characters, a significant feat to pull off. I read this all in one sitting and although my first thought was that the end left too many ties unbound, the more I've thought about it the more I find the hints and evasions, coupled with the different narrative voices, enormously satisfying, and horribly (but interestingly) compelling.

Highly recommended!

hated this book the ending just made me feel the author was just some kind of sick paedophile, racist!
