About the author
Jesse Sutanto is an author of books for children and adults. She received her Masters from the University of Oxford and a BA in English Literature from Berkeley. She grew up in Indonesia and Singapore and currently lives in Jakarta with her husband and two daughters. The film rights to her women’s fiction, Dial A for Aunties, was bought by Netflix in a competitive bidding war.

Dark, addictive and toxic (in a good way 😉)
I really enjoyed You Will Never Be Me. It’s dark, addictive and full of toxic friendship, jealousy, ambition and rivalry. The whole influencer world running through the story makes it even more interesting, especially seeing how quickly friendship can turn into competition when success, followers and money get involved.
What surprised me most was how much I found myself rooting for Aspen. Technically, she’s probably supposed to be the “bad guy” for a lot of the book, and she definitely makes some questionable decisions, but I still found myself on her side. There was something about her ambition, determination and the way she’d fought to build her life that made me want things to work out for her, even when I knew I probably shouldn’t!
The relationship between Aspen and Meredith is what really makes the book. They know each other so well that they know exactly where each other’s weaknesses are, and watching their friendship unravel into jealousy, resentment and manipulation was fascinating. Neither of them is completely innocent, which made it much more interesting because my opinion of them kept changing as the story went on.
There were plenty of moments where I thought I’d worked out where everything was heading, only for something else to happen and completely change the direction of the story. It became one of those books where I kept thinking “just one more chapter” because I needed to know how far they were actually going to take things.
Twisty, uncomfortable and completely addictive. I probably shouldn’t have been rooting for Aspen as much as I was… but I absolutely was!
