A growing body of empirical research exists on institutional review board (IRB) characteristics, (1) methods of review and decision-making practices, (2) and variability in methods among IRBs domestically and internationally. (3) However, there is no literature on how IRB members view their service on their IRB. Because many institutions struggle with managing a high volume of research protocols and determining how best to support their IRBs and human research protections programs, knowing what affects IRB members' commitment to service is relevant and important. Thus, we conducted an exploratory study to identify the individual, group, and institutional factors that may influence commitment to the role responsibilities of being on an IRB. Study Methods
