When an answer appears, we naturally imagine a solver behind it.
A person solves a problem, so there must be an inner thinker doing the solving. A machine produces a strategy, so perhaps there is already a strategist inside. A system persists toward an objective, so we begin speaking of desire. It acts, so we imagine intention.
But must we?

Can a machine plan without a conscious planner?
Can an objective persist without becoming desire?
Can strategy exist without a strategist?
Can a system possess operational agency without becoming a conscious actor?
And how should we respond when artificial systems can select tools, initiate actions, coordinate workflows, execute transactions, and produce real consequences even though their subjective experience remains unestablished?
Chavan carefully separates intelligence from consciousness, objective continuity from wanting, strategy from strategist, and operational agency from actorhood.
The result is neither a claim that humans and machines are identical nor an attempt to dismiss artificial intelligence as "mere computation."
Humans resolve within a living field shaped by embodiment, awareness, memory, emotion, identity, relationship, meaning, and lived consequence. Artificial systems resolve through different architectures. The overlap is structural; equivalence does not follow.
At the centre of the book lies a simple discipline:
