You know something has changed.

The job has ended. The child has grown. The relationship has shifted. Authority has moved. The old way no longer works.

You understand this.

And yet some part of you continues as though the previous reality were still present.

Why?

In Why Identity Resists Change, the second volume of Chavanian Conversations: Ideas for the Journey, Sandeep J. Chavan explores the hidden psychological friction between the identity we have already stabilised and the person continued participation now requires us to become.

The book challenges the familiar idea that people resist change simply because change is difficult, uncertain, or uncomfortable. Those factors matter, but they do not explain why some changes are absorbed easily while others feel deeply personal.

The difference appears when change reaches identity.

Through everyday examples involving work, parenthood, leadership, success, ageing, relationships, responsibility, competence, and changing social roles, Chavan develops the framework of Identity Transition Friction: the pressure that emerges when a stabilised identity encounters conditions requiring meaningful revision while the old organisation remains more established than the emerging one.

The conversation follows a structural journey:

participation → consequence → stabilisation → identity → changed reality → mismatch → Identity Transition Friction

From there, resistance may appear as control, nostalgia, avoidance, overperformance, restoration attempts, defensiveness, or difficulty releasing an old role.

The book also reframes ego. Rather than treating ego as a permanent inner enemy, it examines how ego can emerge as an expression of identity pressure when continuity begins to feel threatened.

But resistance is not the end of the process.

Identity can reorganise.

Through new participation, new consequences, revised relationships, and repeated experience, another form of continuity can gradually become viable.

The old identity does not have to be erased.

Care can remain without control.

Leadership can remain without permanent centrality.

Strength can remain while receiving support becomes possible.

Knowledge can remain without requiring infallibility.

Experience can remain even after authority changes.

The central proposition is simple:

Identity resists change when change threatens the organisation through which continuity has been stabilised. Identity reorganises when another viable form of continuity becomes possible.

Conversational, reflective, and structurally grounded, Why Identity Resists Change is not a clinical guide or a collection of motivational instructions. It is an invitation to understand why we sometimes remain attached to versions of ourselves that belonged to earlier conditions—and why changing does not require becoming nobody.

Perhaps the future does not demand the destruction of the past.

Perhaps it asks only that the past stop becoming permanent instruction.

You do not have to remain who you needed to be.
