Edward Payson Roe (March 7, 1838 – July 19, 1888) is an American writer, priest and pastor. Edward Payson Roe was born in Moodna, Orange County, New York. He studied at Williams College and at Auburn Theological Seminary. During the American Civil War, he wrote articles for newspapers and then lectured about the war and wrote for periodicals. At the time, he was a very popular novelist, especially among middle-class people. His novels have been translated into several European languages.

This work is an autobiography. It describes the experience of the author. The basic aspect of this book if the description of his life when the author became one of the most prized rewards of his literary work is the ever-present consciousness that his writings have drawn around the author a circle of unknown yet stanch friends, who have stood by him unfalteringly for a number of years.
