Digital Color Photography: A Deeper Look

This is a different kind of book about photography. It will take you beyond the tips and tricks of Photoshop and expose the three underlying foundations of digital photography: digital (what the term really means and how it relates to photography), color (how color behaves in and how to best capture and shape it), and photography (how the digital nature of color has changed the way we shoot and present photographs).


Digital photography presents controls that are far superior to its film and chemistry-based predecessor. The degree of control we are afforded over image clarity is greater than ever. That is an established fact. And yet, the level of detail and color fidelity that SHOULD be evident in today’s photography is conspicuously absent. Why? The answer is obvious but largely unrecognized. 


Photography literally means light-writing. Great photographs, like great writing, require a detailed understanding of the art and a solid command of the language. Shakespeare was said to have a 54,000 word vocabulary. His writings are among the most quoted and revered of all time. By comparison, the average person on the street has a vocabulary of less than 3000 words. Mediocrity in both fields is prevalent.


If you want to take command of your photography you must expand your understanding of the language of color and the dynamics of light. Taking a picture with a digital camera today is almost too simple, or so it seems. The automatic nature of the camera has obscured the need to understand and control the elements. The results are both predictable and obvious. Dynamics and detail in photography should be the norm, not the rarity.
