When the time bubble suddenly expands, trapping the prison in the growing anomaly, Efrat and Cori must once again put their uneasy alliance to the test. Together, they must escape the schism and find a way to sever its dependence on the prison's power supply. Preferably before everyone inside starves to death or gets murdered by wizards.

But the world outside the bubble offers its own challenges. For the first time, Cori is forced to step into a leadership role—effectively becoming the prison's acting warden. While many of the stranded men are grateful for her guidance during the chaos, others aren't so quick to accept her authority. To save them all, Cori must prove to them and herself that she is capable of leading them—and fast.
