Knock At A Venture

On Dartmoor, where ancient legend presses close to everyday life, Eden Phillpotts weaves together tales of love, fear, faith, and fate with vivid regional power. Knock at a Venture moves through a landscape of moorland mystery, village gossip, and old memories, revealing how ordinary people are shaped by the harsh beauty and hidden dangers around them. In one haunting episode, Minnie Merle waits in Wistman's Wood for a secret meeting and instead discovers Nicholas at work digging a grave meant for her, exposing betrayal, murder, and a violent struggle that leaves Elias Bassett wounded and the truth chillingly clear. In another, the hopeful union of Jonas Lethbridge and Dinah Hannaford is shadowed by jealousy, misunderstanding, and the bitter aftermath of Amos Thorn's death, with graveside arguments about sin and mercy reopening old wounds. Elsewhere, a Dartmoor fishing village bristles with smuggling, superstition, and divided loyalties as a new preventive officer, Robert Bluett, tries to untangle a community where ghosts, lies, and local pride blur the line between law and lawlessness.
