The Hague, 1971. Peter is thirteen years old when his youngest brother Eddie dies. What begins as an unexplained illness soon turns out to be something far more sinister. The perpetrator turns out to be the last person you would expect.
In this autobiography, Peter speaks with disarming honesty about his childhood in The Hague's Molenwijk neighbourhood, about the loss of Eddie, about a father who lost everything and yet remained standing, and about himself as a child caught in the middle of a family tragedy without anyone ever asking him how he was doing. Because in the nineteen-seventies there was no victim support, no trauma care, no protocol whatsoever for children whose world had just collapsed.
This is also the story of a boy who, despite everything, found his way. Who rose from the dispatch room of an upscale department store in The Hague to boardrooms at home and abroad, and ultimately to the Dutch parliament. As a member of the House of Representatives, he held the honourable role of member of the Parliamentary Inquiry Committee on Corona, the largest parliamentary inquiry since the Second World War.
This is a book about loss and resilience, about questions that remained unanswered for decades, and about the strength of an ordinary, happy life as an answer to the extraordinary thing that happened to him.
