This is how you write nuance
What I love about this installment is that it's completely focussing on the case. Almost every scene is about interrogating, investigating and finding clues. And yet, we do see the impact the case has on our main characters. It does become personal in some way, it does leave its marks. And therefore it never feels like just another detective case.
In this book the victim of the crime is also very much disliked. We rarely see that in book (and real life). If someone dies, the positive survives and the negative is forgotten. In this case the victim hurt so many people that most of the people we meet can only talk negative about her. And yet the authors still add enough nuance to help us understand that she was also only human in the end.
Nuance is the keyword in this novel anyway. Everything about this case is nuanced. The victim, the feelings of the estranged daughter and the murderer and the motive. I love it when I understand everyone involved, when I understand why people are who they are and do what they do, even if it's something bad.
I can't wait for the next installment!
