Midwife Dani and mortician Ranae are life long best friends. Dani runs Breathe Birthing Center, while Ranae tends to the dead at Fair Havens Green Cemetery. They are experts at helping their respective clients transition into and out of this world, and they both love what they do.

But in their personal lives, things aren't so simple.

Although she's doing all she can to keep things together, Dani's happily ever after is unraveling around her. So when someone she's never met - but with a face she'd recognize anywhere - shows up at Breathe asking some hard questions, Dani discovers she's ill-equipped to take on one more emotional challenge in her life.

Ranae's well-intentioned meddling only makes matters worse.

Ranae, a single mom, has grown accustomed to wanting what she believes she can't have, including the love of a good man. So when the long-buried past comes knocking, Ranae isn't sure she's willing to open her heart to it again. But seventeen-year-old Ruby has always longed to know where she came from.

Then Dani accidentally spills Ranae's closely-held secrets to the wrong person.
