Soon to be a major motion picture starring Kristen Connelly, Joan Allen, and Anthony La Paglia, Stephen King’s short story, “A Good Marriage” from Full Dark, No Stars is now available as a stand-alone audio edition!
Bob Anderson, Darcy’s husband of more than twenty years, is away on one of his business trips, when his unsuspecting wife looks for batteries in the garage. Her toe knocks up against a box under a worktable and she discovers she doesn’t know her husband at all, but rather has been living with a stranger. This horrifying discovery, rendered with bristling intensity, could be the end of what Darcy though was a good marriage…

Worst possible narrator choice
For the first couple of minutes I found the narrator’s voice quite pleasant, but that changed very quickly. Why would she read a twisted story like this with the biggest smile on her face the whole time? She sounded as if she was reading about the happiest things in the world. It was very off putting. Then the inner voices and sometimes the speaking voice of the main character was some super weird airy little fairy voice (best description I can give) that sounded like something I’ve never heard in real life. I can’t think of a possible worst choice for a narrator, besides maybe King himself. I thought the little cheery, Starbucks pep in her voice would wear off after a while but she kept it up the whole time. She would be good for reading children’s stories maybe, or something upbeat and innocent, but she should never read anything dark ever again. She butchered this story.
