THE BOOK BEHIND THE THIRD SEASON OF GAME OF THRONES, AN ORIGINAL SERIES NOW ON HBO.
Here is the third book in the landmark series that has redefined imaginative fiction and become a modern masterpiece.
A STORM OF SWORDS
Of the five contenders for power, one is dead, another in disfavor, and still the wars rage. Joffrey sits on the Iron Throne, the uneasy ruler of the Seven Kingdoms. His most bitter rival, Lord Stannis, stands defeated and disgraced, victim of the sorceress who holds him in her thrall. Young Robb still rules the North from the fortress of Riverrun. Meanwhile, making her way across a blood-drenched continent is the exiled queen, Daenerys, mistress of the only three dragons left in the world. As opposing forces maneuver for the final showdown, an army of barbaric wildlings arrives from the outermost limits of civilization, accompanied by a supernatural army of the living dead. As the future of the land hangs in the balance, no one will rest until the Seven Kingdoms have exploded in a veritable storm of swords. . . .

Best in Series So Far!
Narrator Roy Dotrice delivered his best performance yet in A Storm of Swords. His range and emotional depth really elevated the listening experience. However, previous criticisms about some of his character voices still held true for me — I especially disliked the way he voiced Missandei, which pulled me out of the story a few times.
The pace of this book felt much faster than earlier installments, making it easy to stay engaged. There was so much happening, and hearing it all unfold made the story even more immersive. Standout moments like the Red Wedding and Lysa Arryn’s emotional breakdown were narrated with such intensity that they were even more devastating to experience aloud.
That said, there were minor challenges. A few times, the narrator slipped and mixed up accents — for example, during a Jaime chapter, he accidentally used Tyrion’s voice — but overall, it didn’t take away from the strength of the performance.
Do not buy on Apple Books
The book and performance are good. But the UI on Apple Books is unusable bad. The book is broken down into hundreds and hundreds of unlabeled tracks that are 3 minutes each. The tracks are merely numbered, and even that isn’t helpful because the numbers restart periodically, meaning there are multiple tracks labeled “track 1” or “track 54”, etc. It’s impossible to find your place in the book.
Also, when you pause and unpause the book, it will sometimes randomly skip to another part of the book, and again, because of how it’s labeled, getting back to where you were is a pain.
Horrible, horrible UI.
Tracks are annoying. Great voice and reading.
The casting for narration is AMAZING! However the lack of Chapter labels and technical organization of the tracks severely affected my experience to rewind when got lost or skip ahead to specific chapters.
