Recommend It To EVERYONE

Whether you are struggling with disorganized attachment, dating one or even a parent, and want to make sure you show up in a nurturing way, I couldn’t recommend this book enough. It’s practical, educational, and even entertaining. Jessica Baum’s voice is soothing, and you really feel like you’re in her office taking a one on one session with her. Buy it for them, buy it for yourself, and heal. 11/10

🤔

Cons: Overall the general tone seems to come off just a click or two toward negative vibes? I read a different book on the same topic right before this one and it was a lot more of a positive experience. I left that one feeling more hopeful than this one 🤷🏼‍♀️

Heavy emphasis on childhood work which requires access to childhood. Thus, someone who is adopted, who doesn’t have childhood photos, does t have access to childhood or family, etc. will have a difficult time connecting to the work being asked of them from this book.

There are a lot of generalizations and assumptions made, I think largely based on the author’s lived experience, which may make a less critically thinking reader feel inadequate. Example: Assertion that it’s best to complete the self-work as a single rather than when already partnered. If I were partnered I would have quit reading the book at that point.

The processes for development of the inner voice and the way it is discussed might seem pretty strange and out-there for some folks. I’m an open minded “spiritual” kind of person and even I found it a bit “woo-woo” at times.

Pro: Broadly, good concepts to implement.

Can work well for someone who doesn’t immediately have a supportive social community or close friends/family for support.

Several examples of exercises such as meditations or reflections to use to guide yourself.

Empathetic explanation of carer-child dynamics and childhood wounds which includes the fact that our caregivers also have these wounds, which impacts/ed) their ability to be who we need/ed them to be.

Pretty good explanation of supportive research. I haven’t cross referenced to check sources, but it seems decently rooted in science. There was only one part which I know was a misrepresentation of research.

Overall: I might recommend it to my woo-woo yogi new-age friends, but not the general population. That said, it was informative for me.
