Recording Could Be Better
Being familiar with both versions of Autobiography of a Yogi (orange and blue covers) my preference is still for the the classic edition (orange cover) read by Ben Kingsley. He does a super job. Despite the substantial savings of this edition (blue cover), the readers breathy inhales are annoying and distracting to me.
A classic book for a great price
This is probably the best book I have ever read. (I read it years before hearing any of the audiobook.) It inspired me to make some changes in my life that needed to happen, but were hard to motivate myself to do.
If you aren't familiar with it, it's a heart-opening introduction to the spiritual life, the story of one soul who "made it," and reached the goal of the path of Self-realization: as Yogananda defines It, "ever-existing, ever-conscious, ever-new bliss."
Yogananda also tells of many saints that he meets throughout the story, most of them Indian, but even including the Catholic mystic, Therese Neumann.
Very much of this book, particularly the beginning chapters, Yogananda wrote in an engaging story-book format. (I first tried to read them when I was eight years old!) Others are more philosophical — many sections are somewhat mind-blowing. This is a hard book for skeptics and dogmatists to swallow, but if they try, they may find it fascinating nonetheles.
(In connection to this thought, I ought to mention that my grandmother, who IS an open-minded practicing Episcopalian, enjoyed this book very much.)
Swami Kriyananda, who reads the book, is a disciple of Yogananda, and has practiced meditation and Yogananda's teachings for many years — plus he knows how to pronounce the names in the book correctly, having learned some Bengali and Hindi himself! :) Of all the people to have read this, besides Yogananda himself, he's the best.
Considering that, I don't mind an imperfect recording. In these things, it's the vibration — the spirit behind the words — that counts the most, and I feel like both the author and the reader both have it in spades!
One of the best pieces of advice I could give is to get this book now and start listening to it right away! :)
