Publisher Description
A sexy, compulsively readable romantic comedy that dives headlong into the thrill and doubt of modern love by exploring what two high-powered agents will—and won’t—do to get everything they ever wanted, from the New York Times bestselling authors of The Unhoneymooners and Love and Other Words.
Despite the odds against them from an embarrassing meet-awkward at a mutual friend’s Halloween party, Carter and Evie immediately hit it off. Even the realization that they’re both high-powered agents at competing firms in Hollywood isn’t enough to squash the fire.
But when their two agencies merge—causing the pair to vie for the same position—all bets are off. What could have been a beautiful, blossoming romance turns into an all-out war of sabotage. Carter and Evie are both thirtysomething professionals—so why can’t they act like it?
Can Carter stop trying to please everyone and see how their mutual boss is really playing the game? Can Evie put aside her competitive nature long enough to figure out what she really wants in life? Can their actor clients just be something close to human? Whether these two Hollywood love/hatebirds get the storybook Hollywood ending, or just a dramedy of epic proportions, you get to enjoy Christina Lauren’s heartfelt, hilarious story of romance in the modern world.

For a reason I can’t quite pin down, I finished this in one day. It was very good! The narrator was also good

Despite what the title may suggest, this is not an enemies-to-lovers romance. They never actually “hate” each other despite their workplace competition. There is next to no tension in this novel and I have no reason to root for the pair’s relationship. I mean good for y’all but I have no reason to care.
The phrasing of the sexy scenes are so comically unsexy I kind of had to speed through them to avoid a headache. For some reason they talk and act like they’re virgins. (E.g. “under the clothes touching to completion”)
This book is largely about sexism in the workplace but the way the subject is handled is somehow both half-baked and heavy-handed.

- They meet at a party and like each other. There is actually no reason not to as they are both generally pleasant (and dorky) people.
- But oh no, she’s a haggard 33-year-old and he’s only a little baby 28-year-old. But it’s okay because her SATC Samantha-esque friend says Go Get It Girl!
- But oh no! They are coworkers competing for the same position. Will they handle this maturely? (No.)
- There is a couple brief chapters of playful sabotage. For a brief moment I thought this could be kind of fun! And then they called a truce.
- They fool around at work in secret and my interest was piqued for the brief moment before she simply tells everyone they fooled around in secret. I guess this office has no HR.
- Then the 28-year-old little baby boy just discovered that sexism exists apparently. Honestly the most investment I had in this novel was because of how much I hated the boss.
- Though Carter recognizes his career is progressing at Evie’s expense largely because of sexism, he’s content to benefit from it regardless.
- At the same time, I can’t criticize him too much for that when Evie herself has so much misogyny regarding her female coworkers. She’s happy to compete with the women in her office for both the job and the man.
- They both assume that after a night of passion and absolutely zero conversation about it that they’re boyfriend and girlfriend? You know, like adults do.
- Oh yeah, and they almost kill a dog.
Excellent
I was never bored of this book.
