Publisher Description
In April 1992 a young man from a well-to-do family hitchhiked to Alaska and walked alone into the wilderness north of Mt. McKinley. His name was Christopher Johnson McCandless. He had given $25,000 in savings to charity, abandoned his car and most of his possessions, burned all the cash in his wallet, and invented a new life for himself...
"Terrifying...Eloquent...A heart-rending drama wandering of human yearning."--The New York Times
"A narrative of arresting force. Anyone who ever fancied wandering off to face nature on its own harsh terms should give a look. It's gripping stuff."--The Washington Post
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Journalist Jon Krakauer’s deeply researched account of the life and death of Christopher McCandless is utterly absorbing—part biography, part adventure story, and part psychological mystery. Intelligent and headstrong, McCandless cast aside his middle-class upbringing to travel across the United States before dying alone in the Alaskan wilderness. Krakauer digs into a modern American enigma, unearthing the turmoil at the young man’s core. Narrator Philip Franklin reads McCandless’ idealistic journal entries with just the right sense of enthusiasm and trepidation, making us wonder what else was going through his mind during his solitary journeys. We binge-listened to Into the Wild, riveted by McCandless’ personal triumphs, anxious for his missteps, and heartbroken by his fate.
Customer Reviews
Torn
On one hand, the book was well written and clearly exhaustively researched. The author made it as interesting as possible, especially by including personal stories and quick side bars of other similar people.
However, I couldn’t get past the feeling that the situation really didn’t warrant such attention. A mentally troubled young adult passed away due to some unnecessary risks he took based on some crazy ideals. I bet this same thing happens daily in Las Vegas or LA but doesn’t get the same attention due to the romantic ideal of remote Alaska.
Gripping, Open minded, something in here for everyone.
A gripping tale from an open minded viewpoint. A tale of someone we can all identify with and admire in some ways and one that also leaves you shaking your head. A masterfully written must read.
If nothing else...
I read this book at the beginning of every new year just to remind myself not to simply exists but to live life.
Regardless of how you feel about Chris McCandless the romanticism this book inspires inside your heart for adventure is something I hope I will never ever forget or lose in myself. Thank you Chris for this adventure of your life and thank you John for being it to light. And let us NEVER forget “HAPPINESS ONLY REAL WHEN SHARED”
