Malcolm X: The Last Speeches

Must listen.

A lot of this audio book sounds like Denzel Washington. A lot of this I have heard before, but I still enjoyed it.

The audiobook description is “Speeches and interviews from the last two years of Malcolm X’s life”, which is not completely accurate. It seems like the entire book was not edited properly as some of the chapters are choppy and the content do not match the titles.

The book could be improved if the publisher provided an introduction, short biography and table of contents. There are no chapter numbers and no information WHEN and WHERE the speeches or interviews happened.

The chapters that contain actual speeches by Malcolm X are captivating and enlightening. He is an incredibly charismatic and brutally honest speaker. I truly enjoyed this book and I considered any “flaws” in the book to be technical problems. I think a lot of the issues that affected black people in Malcolm’s time are still very relevant today. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in history and race relations in the U.S.

This chapter is 1:43 minutes of classical music. NO SPEECH.

On How The Mainstream Media Operates
18:16 – 19:21 is silence.

Violence
The last 30 seconds is silence.

The Backstabbers
This is not an interview but primarily 1 person talking. The narrator and the show are not identified. Random clips of a Sam Cooke song, dialogues from assorted and unidentified movies (or tv/radio shows?) are inserted in different parts of the chapter.

Martin Luther King and Malcolm X Debate
The chapter opens up with the theme from the “Rocky” movie. This chapter is not a debate together between Martin and Malcolm but random sound clips of the men speaking. The end of the chapter is Kanye West saying “I’m really happy for you. I’ll let you finish but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time” and ends with the “Rocky” theme again.

Childhood
Who is the narrator? He does not sound like Malcolm.

Malcolm X Speaks on Black Economics
The last 2 minutes is jazzy music.
