Publisher Description
September. A beautiful New York editor retreats to a lonely cabin on a hill in the quiet Maine beach town of Dead River - off season - awaiting her sister and friends. Nearby, a savage human family with a taste for flesh lurks in the darkening woods, watching, waiting for the moon to rise and night to fall.
And before too many hours pass, five civilized, sophisticated people and one tired old country sheriff will learn just how primitive we all are beneath the surface...and that there are no limits at all to the will to survive.

Good book not good audio
I really like this book , but am having a hard time listening to the audio because it’s strange having a man talk through the point of view for a woman. Not just conversation either the main character is a woman. This is weird.
Good and Bad
The story is solid gross-out pulp horror, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. The narrator is killing me, though. Guh.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre in a book!
I’ve never listened to this book as an audiobook by the way. I just wanted to get that out of the way so no one gets confused into thinking otherwise. I have read this book as a paperback and that’s my only experience with it. The first and only time I read was when I bought the complete, uncut version from a thrift store, which proves why I like buying books from thrift stores. Even though this is the only book I’ve read by Jack Ketchum, I was well aware of how popular the author was before I ever bought the book. So I had high expectations with this book—and they were met 💯! The two-hundred-seventy page Off Season is a suspenseful, gory, fast-moving nightmare that feels very much like reading The Texas Chainsaw Massacre in a book! The bonus short story Winter Child wasn’t as good, but it didn’t take away from the pleasure for the simple reason that it was also a good story. I don’t ALWAYS want my horror novels to be dripping gore-fests when I read them, but when I want a bloodsoaked nightmare that could happen to ANYONE, I now know who turn to! Jack Ketchum knows how to take your worst nightmare and make it a hundred times more horrible! Enjoy! A word of advice, though. After you read this book, don’t just sleep with lights on. You should also check to make sure that every door and window is locked and double-locked. And when you go to bed, if you own a gun, take it with you and hide it under your pillow so it’s in easy reach. Yes, this bad boy is THAT scary!!! I wrote a review for this edition because it is currently the only way to do so with iBooks. After all, the book is NOT AVAILABLE as an iBook!!! For iBooks users and customers who would like to read the book this way, it should be available. PLEASE FIX THIS!!!
