Publisher Description
For fans of Uprooted and For the Wolf comes a dark, lushly gothic fantasy about a maiden who must unleash the monster within to save her kingdom—but the monster in her head isn't the only threat lurking.
Elspeth needs a monster. The monster might be her.
Elspeth Spindle needs more than luck to stay safe in the eerie, mist-locked kingdom of Blunder—she needs a monster. She calls him the Nightmare, an ancient, mercurial spirit trapped in her head. He protects her. He keeps her secrets.
But nothing comes for free, especially magic.
When Elspeth meets a mysterious highwayman on the forest road, her life takes a drastic turn. Thrust into a world of shadow and deception, she joins a dangerous quest to cure Blunder from the dark magic infecting it. Except the highwayman just so happens to be the King’s own nephew, Captain of the most dangerous men in Blunder…and guilty of high treason.
He and Elspeth have until Solstice to gather twelve Providence Cards—the keys to the cure. But as the stakes heighten and their undeniable attraction intensifies, Elspeth is forced to face her darkest secret yet: the Nightmare is slowly, darkly, taking over her mind. And she might not be able to stop him.

See AllGood book
Enjoyed the story, though didn’t necessarily feel like it was a “gothic” romance as described. Fun to listen to and finished within a matter of days!
My only complaint is in the narration. I felt the narrator portrayed the women as whiny and weak when I felt they were written to be stronger and more courageous. The male voices were also a bit tough to listen to.
In spite of the narration, I really enjoyed the story.
Beautiful and unforgetting
I LOVED this book! So beautifully written with such a magical story.
I wanted love it
I love premise and the character development is okay. Some of the characters could have used a little more flushing out for me. This is my fault. I got this book on a recommendation from someone at a bookstore. Had I known it leaned so heavily into romance and what felt like teen angst, I probably would not have read book 1. That’s not to say it wasn’t enjoyable in other parts of the story because it was good in world building. I might have to ask someone to give me a synopsis for book 2. For those that like romance and teen angst in dark fantasy genre, this is a book I’d recommend.
