Publisher Description

Join one of the world’s leading psychologists in exploring the scientific basis for sustaining great relationships.

You couldn’t ask for a better professor. Prof. DeWall and coauthor, David Myers, publish the world’s best-selling psychology textbooks, reaching millions worldwide. Combining captivating case studies, cutting-edge scientific research, and practical advice, Prof. DeWall gives you the knowledge and tools to be successful in love and relational life. He will help you understand not only why humans desire close relationships but also why some close relationships flourish while others fail. The course will bust relationship myths ("never have an argument") and replace them with practical advice guided by scientific evidence ("use strategies to argue effectively").

First, you will learn about how humans evolved to have a fundamental motivation for positive and lasting relationships. The second section emphasizes the hidden benefits of close relationships. You will learn how relationships literally get under the skin—affecting your hormones, brain functioning, immune system, and gene expression.

The third and final section explores the recent and growing phenomenon of online relationships. Prof. DeWall winds down by addressing the power of social networks in shaping your health and behavior.

The lessons you’ll take away from this course are precious. Learn how you can begin building more connected relationships, companies, and societies today.

Refreshing

Most of the self help books on relationships have too much “woo” for me. They provide nice sounding advice that is impossible to implement in real life. This audio course is completely different. The presenter’s use of scientific studies and data to back up his points is phenonemal. This is truly a science course and helps take much of the mystery out of what terms like “healthy relationship” and “good communication” really mean. The narrator is also excellent, and rarely misses a beat.

Incredible knowledge

This book is a fantastic listen! Nathan DeWall is a very knowledgable professor and provides scientific evidence and study results to examine how relationships and social life can effect your life. DeWall also works to apply these studies to real life and provide ways to put this knowledge to work in your life.

This does seem to take the form of a college class, so it can be a bit dry at times while he is reading off data, but I found the studies to be highly interesting, so it evens out.

Another great DeWall course

This course is a great listen, especially during a time when more effort is required to sustain our relationships than usual. DeWall makes a strong case for our relationships or "social nourishment," being as essential to our health as actual nourishment. I appreciate that this course is not just about romantic relationships, but about the village that each of us needs. The last chapter on how to build more connected societies is especially important, revealing insights about how our worlds become smaller when we have relationships only with likeminded people.
