I was totally invested in this listen! After that emotional ending to the first book, I needed to find out what came next. Will they make it? CAN they make it? Will Clay f' it up all over again? Can he master the art of the grovel enough to make up for hurting Nova?
I needed Nova to hold her own and not immediately soften to Clay's pleas for forgiveness. She delivered. She was no longer the lost girl who arrived in Denver months before; instead, she learned how to stand on her own and accept her worth. She made Clay work for it, to prove that he was sorry with more than words.
Clay showed much more emotional vulnerability to Nova and his teammates. He went from the aloof grump with a chip on his shoulder to being supportive and taking on a mentor role.
Once again, the narrators were terrific in this dual-style audiobook. They convincingly performed both roles, nailing the spicy and emotional parts. It was an engaging listen that pulled me immediately back into the story.
The spice we were teased with in the first book was finally actualized here! It was still medium-burn as Clay needed to worm his way back into Nova's good graces, which took time (completely justified time). Once that spice hit, it hit hard! Clay has a very naughty mouth - I almost combusted.
Shot Taker ends in a cliffhanger, with Clay and Nova getting their well-deserved HEA in the next and final book in the trilogy.
This is a highly recommended listen to all you sports romance lovers!
