Bono—artist, activist, and the lead singer of Irish rock band U2—has written a memoir: honest and irreverent, intimate and profound, Surrender is the story of the remarkable life he’s lived, the challenges he’s faced, and the friends and family who have shaped and sustained him.
Narrated by the author, Surrender is an intimate, immersive listening experience, telling stories from Bono’s early days in Dublin, to joining a band and playing sold out stadiums around the world with U2, plus his more than 20 years of activism.
Throughout a remarkable life, music has always been a constant for Bono and in the audiobook, his distinctive voice is interwoven with a very personal soundtrack adding atmosphere and texture to each and every scene. From moments of classic U2 hits to snippets by The Clash, Patti Smith, Verdi, Johnny Cash and Mozart, Surrender also exclusively features clips of newly recorded reimagined versions of U2 songs including ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’, ‘With Or Without You’, ‘One’, ‘Beautiful Day’ and more, glimpsed for the first time on Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Get ready to see the world through the eyes of one of its biggest rock stars. With this incredible memoir, U2’s frontman leads us through the highs and lows of his life in and outside of the band. We highly recommend the audiobook—Bono tells his story with all the passion and poetry you’d expect from such an accomplished songwriter. We get intimate snapshots of his early years, including memories of playing the Pharaoh in a school production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat with an Elvis-like swagger and the emotional fallout from his mother’s untimely death. There’s insight into the rarefied rock star life, too, and fascinating glimpses into U2’s creative process and conflicts. Listening to Bono’s chatty narration is a joy, while excerpts of drastically rearranged U2 songs like “I Will Follow” and “Sunday Bloody Sunday” gave us new appreciation for the band’s classic tunes. This is a brilliant and satisfying listen.
A captivating and beautifully written memoir that is so delicious for a true U2 fan. 40 wonderful U2 songs are woven into this book and shares the origins/meanings to each of these songs. The chapters on his mother Iris and late Bob and their corresponding songs are absolutely beautiful and brought tears to my eyes as he discussed the complicated relationships with them. Must listen, especially for a true U2 fan.
That is all… Just scrumptious and purely decadent.
