What a great read/listen
The story of the Black Company is unique in my experience of reading. Glen Cook does a fantastic job of creating character depth while keeping the story moving with twists and adventure. The magic used is the story is not overdone and, in fact, only helps to create the mystery that is the black company. I am now reading Water Sleeps and I can't stop.
The narrator Marc Vietor does a wonderful job of adding that extra layer of depth with character voice and situational tone.
If you like good guys who seem like bad guys while being portrayed as an incredible horror and underdogs all at the same time, this is a book/series for you. If you enjoy stories that make you feel like you are one of the guys and upset you when your fellow character gets hurt, this is the beginning of an incredible series for you. I am a huge fan of Eddings, Salvatore, Greenwood, Feist, Paolini, Card, Clancy, and many others, but Cook's "The Black Company" is in my top 5 best stories ever told and I can't recommend this enough.
As a side note, this is not a simple "G" rated story. The troubles and trials the company faces are strong and detailed which only make the read/listen all the more realistic and engrossing.
