APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Published to mark the 50th anniversary of his 1971 death, The Collected Works of Jim Morrison is the last word on the Doors’ iconic front man. This breathtaking audiobook is made up of the rock legend’s diary excerpts, recorded and unrecorded lyrics, and all of his known written work. Morrison’s words capture a unique blend of ’60s Sunset Strip indulgence and Rimbaud-inspired symbolist poetry. It’s pretty intense hearing his wild-eyed, shamanistic visions—performed not just by Morrison but by famous fans like Patti Smith, Liz Phair, and counterculture novelist Tom Robbins. An introduction by editor Frank Lisciandro puts Morrison’s work into cultural context, while a sweet prologue by the singer’s sister, Anne, gives us a peek at the gentle man behind the Lizard King persona. This is a wonderful treat for Doors fans.
