Publisher Description
The Count of Monte Cristo is an adventure novel by Alexandre Dumas.
Published in 1844, it is often considered one of the great thrillers of all time and, along with The Three Musketeers, Dumas' most popular work.
Falsely accused of treason, the young sailor Edmund Dantes is arrested on his wedding day and imprisoned in the island fortress of the Chateau d'If. After staging a dramatic escape, he sets out to discover the treasure of Monte Cristo and catch up with his enemies.
Alexandre Dumas (1802 - 1870) was a French writer, best known for his numerous historical novels of high adventure, which have made him one of the most widely read French authors in the world.

Excellent book.
Only complaint: He rolls his 'r's, and when he pronounces a french word, it sounds more like he's trying to suppress vomiting.
A Perfect Deal
I wish more audiobooks were like this one. The book is very long and unabridged, but for those of us who weren't going to read it any other way, it's perfect.
Understand, this seems at times to have been done in one take. The reader sometimes stumbles over his words, one can hear pages turning and the voices aren't very dynamic. I wouldn't pay more than $5.00 or $10.00 for this because of the low production value, but if every classic were done this way, I'd soon have a very large audiolibrary. The narrator's English bravado makes if feel more like your really cool foreign uncle is reading to you, and he makes it interesting.
For the price, the time and the quality, you can't ask for better. I'd buy a whole library full of these, since I'm always reading something on tape.
Five stars!
Fantastic revenge story of treasure, shipwreck, dungeons, honour and betrayal
The narrator has a pleasant educated English voice that made the 50 hours listening pass very quickly. As well, this unabridged version of The Count of Monte Cristo is far more sensational as a complete story than the abridgements and adaptations I have come across.
The book downloads as seven files each of about 200 MB in the audible proprietary format and tracks every two hours. I gave up trying to play it on my iPod: this is a story where it really helps to be able to back up a few minutes if you miss a detail.
It is a slight pity that the reader spoils an otherwise excellent performance by mispronouncing the name of the main character throughout. (Dantès, like Mercédès, ends in an “ess” sound as you can hear by previewing Le Comte de Monte-Cristo.)
