Publisher Description
In The Power, the world is a recognizable place: there's a rich Nigerian boy who lounges around the family pool; a foster kid whose religious parents hide their true nature; an ambitious American politician; a tough London girl from a tricky family.
But then a vital new force takes root and flourishes, causing their lives to converge with devastating effect. Teenage girls now have immense physical power: they can cause agonizing pain and even death. And, with this small twist of nature, the world drastically resets. From award-winning author Naomi Alderman, The Power is speculative fiction at its most ambitious and provocative, at once taking us on a thrilling journey to an alternate reality, and exposing our own world in bold and surprising ways.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Smart and exhilarating, The Power blew our minds at every turn. When young women suddenly develop the ability to administer powerful electric shocks, global power dynamics flip practically overnight. Women’s physical dominance paves the way for them to have the upper hand in every field, from business to politics, while men become the ones who can’t safely walk alone at night. Author Naomi Alderman spins her thought-provoking story through the eyes of four compelling protagonists—and narrator Adjoa Andoh gives all of them distinct personalities. The Power is more than a glimpse of how society could be. It’s a clever commentary on how it already is.
Customer Reviews
Disturbing and thought provoking
The main intention of this book is to highlight the terror and violence men have inflicted upon humanity over millennia in the name of blood drenched progress.
The premise is that if women were physically superior, they would behave just as cruel as men have. I presume the author does not actually believe this and just creates this alternative future as a more effective mirror image of our past.
On the surface one might conclude that the author is suggesting power corrupts genders equally. Under the surface I think the author is asking the question if not the opposite might be true.
My answer would be: more women in power to the extent that who wields power ceases to be skewed by gender, will make the world a better place.
I’d give 5 stars if it were not for the ‘high price’ expected by the reader in terms of being subjected to the extreme descriptions of violence.
The Power - WOW
Great book. Just wow. Can I admit that while there were very cringe worthy moments that make me glad women don’t have the power - there were also moments when I enjoyed seeing men be scared to walk alone at night. Even though it is fictional I got a sense of satisfaction from men being subjected to the horrors women face and have faced for THOUSANDS of years. The voice acting was SUPERB!
Disappointing! Did not finish
Expected a fresh perspective, but flipping the genders and reveling in violence doesn’t add insight or make it interesting. Need to take a shower. Ugh.
